Every access control project reaches the same fork: fingerprints and faces, or cards and fobs? Both replace keys, both log entries, both are miles ahead of a shared padlock. But they behave differently in daily use, and the right answer depends on who is walking through your doors and how often.
A fingerprint or face cannot be lent, lost or cloned at a market stall. That single property makes biometric access control the standard for areas where identity truly matters: server rooms, cash rooms, laboratories, management floors.
Modern face recognition devices are fast and touchless, and they double as attendance, one event marks the register and opens the door. The trade-offs are honest ones: wet or worn fingers can frustrate fingerprint sensors in workshops, and biometric enrolment takes administration when workforces churn quickly.
RFID card access wins on throughput and flexibility. Cards read instantly at flap barriers handling hundreds of people an hour, temporary cards suit visitors and contractors, and revoking a lost card takes seconds at the software.
The weakness is equally honest: a card proves the card arrived, not the person. Cards get shared, and low-frequency cards can be cloned. For general office doors that risk is usually acceptable; for sensitive rooms it is not.

How many people per hour must the busiest door handle? What happens on power failure, does each door fail safe or secure? Can the system grow to more doors without replacing the controller? And who maintains it, because readers, locks and controllers need the same preventive care as any security system.
Per door, the hardware difference is smaller than most people expect. An RFID reader setup and a fingerprint device for the same door are often within a modest range of each other; face recognition devices sit higher. The bigger cost variables are elsewhere: the electric lock type (EM lock versus flap barrier is a different world), controller architecture, and cabling distance.
Recurring costs differ too. Cards are a consumable, people lose them, new joiners need them, and a busy site reorders regularly. Biometrics have no consumable, but enrolment takes admin time. Over a few years these roughly balance out, which is why we advise choosing on security behaviour, not on small hardware price gaps.
Enrol properly: two fingers per person minimum, so a bandaged finger does not lock someone out. Position readers out of direct sun and rain, or use housings, outdoor exposure is the top killer of readers. Configure anti-passback on turnstiles only after staff are used to the system, or the first week becomes a helpdesk queue.
And connect access control to your fire alarm from day one so controlled doors release automatically on alarm. It is a small integration during installation and a serious retrofit afterwards, and it is the difference between a secure building and a safe one.
